A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a Brazilian priestidentified as Ademir Marques, in a volunteer center in Dublin, Ireland. According to authorities, the friar was hit in the head, but is doing well and should soon return to his activities.

The case happened on Thursday, 25th, at the Capuchin Day Center, a Catholic NGO dedicated to helping homeless and poor people. According to the newspaper The JournalAdemir was in the center hall, where some people were having lunch, when one of them got up and attacked him.

The priest was rescued and taken to a local hospital, where he received treatment and has since been released. To the Sunday Worlda witness said the attack was “totally unexpected” as the perpetrator was a regular at the center.

Anthony Geraghty was arrested on suspicion of assault and illegal possession of a blade. According to the newspaper, his lawyer claimed that he had a cognitive disability and was non-verbal. The suspect must undergo a psychological evaluation and receive legal aid.

In a statement, the chief executive of the Capuchin Day Centre, Brian Friel, said that “fortunately, thanks to the quick intervention of our team, Father Ademir only suffered a superficial injury and will return to his ministry tomorrow, as usual”.
