In the audience in Budapest, Eduardo Bolsonaro was listening to the heirs of Francoism in Spain, allies of Donald Trump, members of Javier Milei’s team and some of the most xenophobic parties in the Netherlands, Italy, Slovenia, Poland, France, Germany and Austria.

Before Eduardo Bolsonaro, the other speeches made explicit attacks against the LGBTQI+ movement, NGOs, intellectuals, the judiciary, the press and immigrants.

When introducing himself, the Brazilian deputy cited cases of Daniel Silveira to justify his argument that people can be arrested in Brazil “for speaking out”. “Is this a democracy? In a democracy, someone is arrested for speaking? This is the reality in Brazil,” he said, without explaining the crimes that the former deputy committed and only mentioning that he “made a video criticizing the STF.” “He’s in prison for talking,” the deputy said.

Eduardo Bolsonaro also criticized the arrest of participants in the attacks against Praça dos Três Poderes, on January 8, 2023, indicating how people would have been treated as terrorists. According to him, many of those arrested were “in peaceful camps”, he claimed that no shots were fired on that date and that the group was “revolted” by the 2022 electoral process.

The deputy also used the arrests of Felipe Martins, Silvinei Vasques (former director general of the Federal Highway Police), Mauro Cid and others to suggest that there was an alleged abuse of power against his movement.

According to him, the allegations against these people that there was a coup d’état are “fantasies”. “They were never initiated or planned,” he said.
