The Uruguayan court imposed restrictions on a teacher for racist, xenophobic and discriminatory speeches against black Brazilians in the classroom. The decision was announced on Wednesday (24), according to the local press.

The complaint was made by third-year students at the Technological Educational Center in the city of Rivera. According to the newspaper “El Observador”, the professor said:

“In my family we don’t hire black people because they are not hardworking, much less Brazilian black people of African origin, they are even lazier. Brazilians who are ‘mixed’ with foreigners are workers. Rural workers must be exploited like the poor, if they don’t like it, they must be left to starve.”

The complaint was originally made in May 2023, according to a report on the “Subrayado” portal. The students filed the complaint with the Rivera Educational Center and the country’s education authority, according to “El Observador”.

The accused is Martín Guadalupe, son of deputy Eduardo Guadalupe, from the National Party — the same as president Luis Lacalle Pou.

According to “El Observador”, the judge in the case, Ivana Cantera, provisionally ordered that Martín Guadalupe maintain a distance of 300 meters from the complaining students and is prohibited from communicating with them for 120 days. He was charged with the crime of “inciting hatred, contempt or violence against certain people.”

The students said they felt “humiliated” by the teacher’s statements:

“We as students feel humiliated since we are mostly black and poor, our Brazilian companions also feel discriminated against by such words spoken by Mr. Martín Guadalupe”, says an excerpt. Although this is not explicit, the text suggests that there were Brazilian students in the classroom.

According to a report published by the newspaper “La Diaria”, the teacher’s defense argued that the most important content of his speech in class was not about skin color.

Deputy Eduardo Guadalupe, father of the accused, said that his son is being persecuted.
