Police arrest pro-Palestinian protesters at US university

Students were arrested during a pro-Palestine protest at a university in Los Angeles, in the United States, this Wednesday (24). A video shows confusion between police and protesters. Watch above.

The protest took place at the University of Southern California. The institution said police were conducting an operation on campus to disperse protesters and warned that arrests could be made.

About half an hour later, the university announced that the campus was being closed. Students who were inside the institution would be allowed to leave.

Aerial footage recorded by a US TV station recorded the moment when police attempted to approach two students. Then, a push and shove began.

Another image showed the moment the police arrested some protesters. The exact number of arrests was not released by authorities.

Similar demonstrations took place at several world-renowned institutions, such as Columbia, Yale and New York universities. More than 100 people were arrested.

Also this Wednesday, students were also detained at the University of Austin, in Texas. There, the police entered the campus with batons and horses.

Students are protesting against violence in the Gaza Strip and in favor of a ceasefire in the region.

Among the protesters’ demands is also the severing of financial ties between universities and Israel.

Protesters consider the relationship with Israel unsustainable and repudiate the country’s military campaign in Gaza, where more than 34,000 people have died since October, according to data from the Hamas-controlled government.

Some Jewish students say they do not feel safe at universities. On the other hand, there are Jews who are also part of the pro-Palestine movement.
