The United States Congress approved this Tuesday (23) a package that authorizes the sending of financial aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. President Joe Biden said he will sign the laws into law in the coming hours.

With the laws approved, the United States must send US$95 billion (R$487 billion) to allies abroad. This money will be divided into:

  • US$61 billion to Ukraine;
  • US$26 billion to Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones;
  • US$8.12 billion to Taiwan.

The package that passed the Senate also includes the transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine, new sanctions against Iran, as well as a law that could pave the way for TikTok to be banned in the country. Understand more below.

After approval in Congress, President Joe Biden stated that the United States is already preparing to send US$1 billion in military aid to Ukraine.

US aid to Ukraine will come at a time when the country faces shortages of military supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had been pressing the West for collaboration.

The US press said the aid package could be the last approved by Congress before the presidential election, scheduled for November.

In theory, ByteDance will have to sell TikTok’s operations within the United States to another company that has no relationship with the Chinese company.

The company will have 270 days to sell TikTok. The deadline may be extended by agreement for another 90 days. If the law is not complied with, big tech companies Apple and Google will have to remove the social network from their app stores.

The expectation is that ByteDance will file a lawsuit to prevent compliance with the law approved by the United States Congress, arguing that the measure is unconstitutional.
