Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada announced this weekend that the group will begin applying its interpretation of sharia law in Afghanistan, including the reintroduction of public flogging and stoning of women for adultery.

Safia Arefi, lawyer and head of the Afghan human rights organization Women’s Window of Hope, accuses the international community of silence:

Now, no one is by their side to save them from the Taliban’s punishments. The international community has chosen to remain silent in the face of these violations of women’s rights.

Allah X Satan

In a broadcast on Taliban-controlled Afghan radio and television on Saturday, March 30, Akhundzada said: “Let’s flog women… let’s stone them to death in public”.

You may call it a violation of women’s rights when we publicly stone or flog them for committing adultery because they conflict with your democratic principles. Bads I represent Allah and you represent Satan”, declared the supreme leader of the Taliban.

The measure is justified as part of the Taliban’s fight against Western influences. “Tal’s workibã did not end with the taking of Kabul, it just began“, he said.

Horror, no surprise

The news was met with horror, but not surprise, by Afghan women’s rights groups, who say the dismantling of any remaining rights and protections for the country’s 14 million women and girls is now almost complete.

Sahar Fetrat, an Afghan researcher at Human Rights Watch, also criticizes complacency towards the Taliban and points to this passivity as the cause of the current resurgence: “They have tested their draconian policies one by one and have reached this point because there is no one to hold them accountable for the abuses.”.

417 public floggings and executions

Since taking power in August 2021, the Taliban have dissolved Afghanistan’s Western-backed constitution and suspended existing penal codes, replacing them with their strict, fundamentalist interpretation of sharia law.

Last year alone, Taliban-appointed judges ordered 417 public floggings and executions, according to Afghan Witness, a research group that monitors human rights in Afghanistan. Of these, 57 were women.
