Japan is investigating two deaths and more than 100 hospitalizations, which may be linked to a cholesterol supplement, the beni koji.

According to the AP news agency, an official from the Japanese Ministry of Health warned that there could be more victims in the coming days.

He asked everyone to stop eating anything containing beni koji. Those with health problems, such as weak kidneys, may be especially vulnerable.

National recall

The company Kobayashi Pharmaceutical removed products containing an ingredient called red yeast rice from the market after several complaints from customers who reported kidney problems.

The product is produced by fermenting steamed rice with food fungi.

The recalled products did not require a prescription.

In addition to the supplements, more than 40 other companies’ products containing beni koji, including miso paste, crackers and vinegar sauce, were recalled.

All products were manufactured in Japan, although it is unclear whether any of the raw materials were imported.

A recall of imported health supplements has happened before, but this is the first major recall of a domestically produced supplement, according to Japanese media reports.

Alternative treatment for cholesterol

Beni Koji is a supplement made from rice fermented with the Monascus fungus. This fermentation technique is traditional in Asian cuisine.

In Japan, Beni Koji is known for its versatility and distinctive flavor, being incorporated into a variety of dishes, from sauces to drinks.

In addition to taste, Beni Koji offers a variety of health benefits.

Medical research characterizes this substance as a possible alternative to statins in reducing cholesterol, although it also highlights the risk of damage to organs, depending on the chemical composition.
