Globo takes drastic decision to save Renascer

Globo is not fully satisfied with the performance of Reborn. The soap opera records good audience numbers, with a better performance than Terra e Paixão (2023) in the same period. However, the serial did not achieve widespread repercussion.

Juan Paiva and Giullia Buscacio in Renascer

Keeping an eye on the audience’s apathetic behavior, the channel took a drastic decision and started re-editing the soap opera’s chapters, in an attempt to make them livelier. There are so many changes that not even the channel knows exactly what is being aired.

Reissued chapters

Anyone who usually follows the summaries of the Renascer chapters released by Globo will have already noticed that the scenes from the soap opera are being shown differently. The broadcaster has advanced some sequences and has been editing the chapters.

Last week, the sex scene between João Pedro (Juan Paiva) and Sandra (Giullia Buscacio) was scheduled for Friday’s episode (22), but was aired on Wednesday (20). This week, the scene in which João Pedro sees Mariana (Theresa Fonseca) naked in the waterfall was scheduled for this Thursday (28), but was aired on Wednesday (27).

The changes make a difference in the chapters. Apparently, the broadcaster’s intention is to offer at least one sequence with a strong impact per day. As a result, the plot loses some of its usual doldrums.

Search for impact

Bruno Luperi

More than seeking an audience, Globo wants people to talk about Renascer. As the plot moves at a slow pace – a characteristic of Benedito Ruy Barbosa that Bruno Luperi usually maintains –, there are chapters in which nothing very significant happens.

Without a “bomb”, the public has nothing to comment. And, currently, the repercussion is as important or more important than the audience itself. Globo uses engagement data from its products on the web to offer them to the market. Therefore, it is important that the soap opera is not only seen, but also talked about.

Interestingly, the changes in the Renascer chapters left Globo itself a bit lost. In the chapters available on Globoplay, for example, the channel stopped publishing the summary of the day, replacing it with a general description of the plot. Which shows that not even the broadcaster really knows what happened in the chapter in question, such is the change.

It’s not today

Republishing chapters of a soap opera in search of better results is not something that unusual at Globo. The broadcaster did this not long ago in Fuzuê (2023), a plot that was known for being the biggest fiasco in the seven o’clock band.

As the soap opera dropped its ratings, the channel called on the experienced Ricardo Linhares to supervise Gustavo Reiz’s work. With the arrival of reinforcements, the plot underwent changes and had chapters re-edited, with the intention of gaining more rhythm.

Something similar happened in Em Família (2014). Manoel Carlos’ last soap opera was divided into three phases, but Globo realized that the slowness of the first two parts was scaring the public away. As a result, the soap opera was re-edited in its first week, to reach its third and final phase.

At the time, the maneuver didn’t do much good, as Em Família didn’t reach good ratings. To make matters worse, the re-editing of the initial episodes caused the author to lose chapters, which ended up delaying his work.
