Daniel Del Sarto made his debut in soap operas such as Nicolau de Escolhas de Mulher (2002), a problematic 7pm attraction that Globoplay revived on Monday (25). In an exclusive interview with NaTelinhathe actor recalls the work and reveals that, still a newcomer, he was surprised to find a very competitive environment behind the scenes of the plot.

“I was inexperienced, very green, not so much in acting, but in my relationship with television and with my colleagues. He had an innocence and a purity that, in fact, he should have managed better. I thought it was just about doing a good job. I was entering a world that I had no idea how competitive it was”, he comments.

The actor had already acted on TV in the series Sandy and Junior, as the protagonist’s boyfriend. The first name mentioned for the role of Nicolau in Desires de Mulher was not to the liking internally, and Daniel was called to do a test, recorded at Mirante do Leblon, looking at the camera.

“It was a gigantic text, to the point that other colleagues were unable to memorize it in its entirety. I did it, because I thought, ‘Man, this is going to be my chance,’” he recalls. He still did three more tests before receiving the news that he had been approved to play the young heartthrob of the plot.

“When I received the news, it was delirious. I was in a shopping mall when the casting producer called me saying the role was mine. I screamed, and the security guard came to me and asked what had happened.”

“Everyone was on the beach and we were premiering a seven o’clock soap opera”

Behind the scenes of Desires de Mulher was tumultuous. The attraction was already facing low ratings and several criticisms in the press when personal problems made the author Euclydes Marinho step aside and leave the text to his collaborators. “The soap opera had been brought forward and aired during the summer. Everyone was on the beach and we were premiering a seven o’clock soap opera.”

In his first soap opera, Daniel Del Sarto faced turbulence. He heard from a director who was dispersed and very approachable with the professionals on set. The objective, according to the actor, was to work on the personality of Nicolau, a friendly and kind young man. The crisis faced by the production was known to the cast:

“I didn’t feel like it came directly to me, but there is that saying: when everything is going well, everyone is wonderful; when something is going wrong, they will think: ‘Is this the first-time actor? Is the cast not good? Is it the author’s fault? Who is to blame?’.”

After 22 years, he assesses that, despite the setbacks, he performed well in his debut, starring with names like Regina Duarte, Gloria Pires, Herson Capri, Mel Lisboa, Regiane Alves and Vera Holtz: “Despite my little experience, I think It was a very well done job. There was a sensitivity there, a truth in that character.”

Actor talks about 8 years away from soap operas: “It doesn’t depend on us”

Daniel Del Sarto’s last soap opera was Cúmplices de um Resgate, shown between 2015 and 2016 on SBT and whose rerun ended in February. He has dedicated himself to several other projects. “The thing about making a soap opera is that it doesn’t depend on us. There’s a whole system. You need to be called to take a test, someone has to indicate it”, he comments.

“I really miss doing soap operas, and I have a real passion to do a series. There have been some hits on the post in recent years because some dates didn’t work out.”

The actor has worked in cinema and mainly in theater. Among them, two shows about the 1980s, one for adults and one for children. The artist travels through time, performing songs from that time, and also tells a little about his own history.

“When I start to sing, people get very emotional, because it’s as if I bring back the child they were”, he says. The dialogue with children was extended to the staging of O Pequeno Príncipe, which recently ran at the Theatro Municipal do Rio.

The artist is also dedicated to several music projects, with some releases coming soon, shows at weddings and company parties, as well as being a master of ceremonies. His job as a presenter led him to launch a web talk show. With Pense Very Bem, Daniel picks up guests by car without saying where he is going to take them.

“It’s a way of giving vent to all my creativity and the desire to achieve that I have. I’m not one to wait for the phone to ring or for a production team to call me. I’m doing things that I think will help me in some way, and it’s been a really cool experience.”
