Samsung TV with artificial intelligence turns 4K into 8K

After the smartphone, tablet and notebooks with artificial intelligence, it is time for televisions with embedded AI. Samsung has just presented the 2024 line of its devices, which highlights the New QLED 8K, Neo QLED and OLED series with neural processors (NPU).

This means that televisions are capable of making improvements, upscaling (increasing resolution by filling pixels) in a more dynamic way. According to the South Korean brand, the televisions have access to a huge database with thousands of images of different themes.

And what the TV’s AI does is analyze which fragments of each image can be used to optimize the scene. But the reader may ask us: don’t modern devices already do this? Yes, upscaling is a common technique among smart TVs, but AI TV goes further and promises to solve a bottleneck that interferes with sales of 8K devices.

8K televisions were introduced worldwide in 2013, but have not yet taken off, unlike 4K which have become the majority. In Brazil, 8K TV is recent and very expensive, while 4K televisions account for 69% of the market.

Embedded AI is also capable of understanding user tastes and curating content

In addition to the price, one of the arguments that justify the small demand for the most sophisticated devices is the fact that there is not a consistent volume of 8K content available for use. Thus, the consumer sees no reason to spend a large sum for a resource that he will not see in practice.

What AI TV does is basically convert lower quality content into maximum quality. In other words, if there are no films and programs available in 8K, the television will be in charge of converting them for the user.

According to executives, televisions with artificial intelligence can transform Full HD content to 4K. 4K content is optimized very close to a genuine 8K film.

Thus, Samsung promises that old, low-resolution videos will receive treatment to improve definition when displayed on AI screens.

Big screen in small space

One of the points made by Samsung executives is that artificial intelligence will also solve a practical problem for many consumers. Large screens are often uncomfortable in small spaces.

One of the reasons is the fact that very large screens close to the eyes reveal imperfections in the images. Thus, what should be an impressive experience becomes frustrating.

Artificial intelligence is capable of adjusting color balance according to the type of game

At the same time, there is a strong demand for large screens, over 65 inches, which correspond to 28% of sales. In the case of Samsung, 65-inch televisions account for 27% of sales, while 75-inch and 85-inch devices account for 10% and 4%, in that order. With AI it is possible to improve image quality without losing visual comfort.

Functions of TV with artificial intelligence

In addition to upscaling content, the TV with artificial intelligence is also capable of adjusting brightness and contrast levels according to the environment and learns how the user likes to watch certain content, such as films, football matches or series. In a live game broadcast, AI reduces the traces caused by “bottlenecks” between the transmission and the formation of the image on the screen.

The audio has also undergone adjustments. The AI is capable of perceiving the ambient sound of the room and amplifying only the actors’ voices. In other words, instead of raising the general volume, it selects only the lines so that ambient noise does not interfere with understanding.

AI TV is also capable of talking to smart devices in the home, such as cell phones, notebooks, air conditioning, cameras, lamps, refrigerators and even washing machines. And according to the brand, it is not necessary for the device to be from Samsung, since the connectivity system is compatible with more than 3 thousand products.

Prices and measurements

But all of this has a price. Televisions with embedded AI cost between R$4,654 and can reach R$85,500.
