What the new humanoid robot looks like

  • According to Astribot, the S1 can execute movements with a maximum speed of 10 meters per second and handle a payload of 10 kg per arm.
  • This speed, as shown in the video below, is fast enough to pull a tablecloth from under a stack of wine glasses without them falling to the floor.
  • In addition to being fast, the S1 is incredibly accurate, doing everything from opening and pouring wine, to flipping a sandwich in a frying pan and practicing a little handwriting.
  • The video also shows that the robot is very adept at imitating human movements, which means it should be a good learner of new tasks.

The video is impressive, but leaves some questions hanging in the air. It was not clear, for example, whether the robot has any means of locomotion or whether it only functions stationary.

Astribot also hasn’t officially announced when the S1 goes into production. The promise is that the robot will be commercially available in 2024.

Who is Astribot?

  • The company was founded in 2022 in Shenzhen, China. The S1 humanoid robot took a year to develop.
  • The website also indicates that the company’s parent company is Stardust Intelligence, founded by Lai Jie, who also worked at Tencent Robotics Laboratory, Baidu and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
  • The company’s long-term plan is to develop and popularize AI-powered robots.
