According to a recent survey, young Japanese people are not interested in platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, to the point that they prefer to play on portable devices like the Nintendo DS.

A survey carried out at the end of 2023, now shared by Automaton West, had the help of around 700 young Japanese people aged between 15 and 24, who position Nintendo Switch and PC as the main platforms for playing video games, but both far below the popularity of mobile.

Among the approximately 700 young Japanese people, 80% play video games and almost 95% responded that they play on mobile. The Nintendo Switch was mentioned by more than 38% of respondents as a platform they like to play on, while the PC was mentioned by more than 33% of people who play video games.

In fourth place comes the Tablet, with more than 26%, and in fifth place the surprising Nintendo DS with more than 12% in these multiple-choice answers presented to young Japanese people about which platforms they prefer to play on.

This means that the PS5 and Xbox Series are below the Nintendo DS among the most popular platforms among young Japanese people, which suggests that they are practically irrelevant platforms among younger people. Even players who consider themselves hardcore chose Switch, mobile or PC as their main platform.

The price of these current generation consoles is an important factor as the majority of young people surveyed say they spend less than 70 euros per year on video games, as they focus on free games.
