Unlike the PC, which offers several different stores, consoles are closed ecosystems, where only the hardware manufacturer can make sales. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer would like to see that change.

During the Game Developers Conference 2024, Phil Spencer was unhappy with the current console ecosystems and stated that he would like to end these limitations, being able to bring other stores such as Epic Games and Steam to the consoles.

[Considere] our history as a Windows company. No one would blink twice if I said, ‘Hey, when you’re using a PC, you decide what kind of experience you’re going to have. [escolhendo onde comprar jogos]. There is real value in this.

For Phil Spencer, this change would be beneficial not only for players, but also for console manufacturers. With the market increasingly competitive and technology becoming increasingly expensive, he believes that these constraints keep players away more than they keep them on the platform.

So I think, what are the barriers? What are the things that create friction in today’s world for creators and players? And how can we be part of opening up this model?

For Phil, when players do not have the ability to choose where to buy their games, the experience suffers. He uses the example that Microsoft has been doing on the PC, offering its games both in its own store and on Steam, giving players freedom to decide.
