Angra dos Reis hosts Quadrangular Handball tournament

Angra dos Reis will host the Quadrangular Handball Tournament on May 18th, from 8am to 8pm, at the Ginásio Getúlio Campos Telles, located at the Municipal Stadium. The event, organized by the Department of Sports and Leisure of Angra City Hall, promises to bring together women’s and men’s teams from different cities in the region, including Barra Mansa and Itaguaí.

The tournament will feature the participation of the teams Handebol Angra, Atlética Medicina Angra, Handebol Barra Mansa, Imperial Handebol Clube de Itaguaí and Santa Cruz Handebol. The first three placed will be awarded prizes, making the competition even fiercer.

The idea for holding this tournament arose from the creation of a sports hub for the sport, which has received support from the sports department since the end of 2022. Mayara Madeira, professor at the Sports Secretariat and one of the organizers of the event, highlights the importance to bring together handball practitioners from the region and spread the sport throughout the region.

– Since the end of 2022, the sports department has supported handball, through the creation of a sports hub for adults, with or without experience in the sport. Our region has several teams that play the sport, but without any championship that covers everyone. With this tournament, our idea is to bring together handball practitioners and spread the sport throughout the region – comments Mayara Madeira.

Furthermore, the competition also aims to encourage young people to learn about and practice the sport. Mayara highlights that in Angra there are still few children and teenagers who are enthusiastic about the sport, but believes that the adult team representing the city and the competition with several teams can spark the interest of younger people and create a solid base in Angra.

– In Angra, we still have few children and teenagers who are enthusiastic about the sport. Now, with the municipality having an adult team to represent the city and a competition with several teams, we have the opportunity to spark this interest in younger people and, who knows, create a base in Angra – concludes Mayara.

The tournament will be played on a straight points system, with all teams facing each other. Each win will be worth three points, a draw will be worth two points and a loss will be worth one point. The top two placed teams will compete in the grand final, while the teams that come in third and fourth place in the overall score will decide who will win the third place trophy in the tournament.
