Aston Martin revealed the reason behind the abandonment of the new rear wing during the Formula 1 Miami GP weekend. The Silverstone team intended to use a low aerodynamic resistance design to gain speed on the straights, but ended up returning to the anterior wing.

Team principal Mike Krack explained that the behavior of the Pirelli tires required greater downforce. “The increase in slip with the low downforce concept made us rethink. It’s always a debate whether we prioritize top speed or downforce,” said Krack.

Despite the change, Aston Martin had a difficult weekend. No driver advanced to Q3, and Fernando Alonso finished the race a distant 15th on Saturday. However, the Spaniard gained two valuable points with ninth place on Sunday, benefiting from a Safety Car entry.

“We were lucky with the Safety Car,” acknowledged Alonso. “We planned to stop later on the hard tires, but the Safety Car came on the right lap. With the medium tires, we had an advantage over those who used hard tires. Overall, we were lucky with the strategy and the Safety Car. We improved in the race compared to the qualifying session, but we still need to evolve and find more rhythm”, concluded the Spaniard.
