Disclosure: Gustavo Heide

End of the line for Brazil in Austria. This Thursday (9), three Brazilians were on the court to compete in the Mauthausen Challenger. In the round of 16 of the men’s singles, Gustavo Heide lost to Slovak Jozef Kovalik 2-0 (2-6 and 1-6). In turn, in the doubles, Orlando Luz and Fernando Romboli fell in the quarterfinals against the Austrian team Oberleitner/Schwaerzler. The score was 2-0 for the home team, with partials of 4-6 and 4-6.

Those who don’t do it, take it

Sometimes an elastic score may not tell you much about what a match was like. A good example of this was the duel between Gustavo Heide, number 141 in the ATP rankings, against Slovak tennis player Jozef Kovalik, number 160 in the world. Despite the Brazilian having only played three games during the two sets, the match was not easy for Kovalik.

In the first half, all games were won by the minimum difference in points. Thus, both tennis players came close to winning all the disputes. Despite the balance, there were only two break-points in the entire set, both in favor of Kovalik. The Slovak did not waste his opportunities and closed the partial 6-2.

In the second set the script was similar. Again, the games were evenly matched and it was Kovalik who knew how to define them. In the first match, Heide had her first favorable break-point in the match, but was unable to take advantage of it. And as the saying goes: those who don’t do it, take it. The Slovak then broke the Brazilian’s serve and managed to take a 3-0 lead. In the fifth game, the same thing – break-point wasted by Heide and then a break from Kovalik, which closed the match 6-1.

Victory for the home team

In the doubles duel at the Mauthausen Challenger, Orlando Luz and Fernando Romboli fell to the Austrian team made up of Neil Oberleitner and Joel Schwaerzler. With a double 6-4, the hosts dispatched the Brazilians from the tournament. The duel was very balanced, with only two breaks of serve in the entire match, both in favor of the Austrians. Finally, a curious highlight was that the Brazilian duo had six aces, while Oberleitner/Schwaerzler did not score once in this way.
