The rescue group, which includes Pedro Scooby and other surfers specializing in giant waves, has drawn public attention during actions to help flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul. Willyam Santana, one of the surfers at the scene, reported that factions are preventing residents from leaving flooded areas.

The surfer reported that, on Tuesday morning (7), a meeting was held with the Rio Grande do Sul Police at the main volunteer base. “We managed to pass on some information, some things I saw yesterday. There are factions that are preventing families from leaving”, revealed Santana.

“I put people on the boat and, when it was time to leave, a woman came inside the place where they were staying and everyone left [do barco] scared”, added the surfer in a post made in stories. As revealed by him and other athletes in the group, the focus of the day is rescuing residents of Eldorado do Sul.

In the report shared on social media, Santana did not reveal in which region the factions were acting to prevent rescues of residents. During the first day in the state, surfers were committed to rescuing residents of Eldorado do Sul, but highlighted that, now, the actions will be more focused on specific areas.

A Itatiaia questioned the government of Rio Grande do Sul and the state Public Security Secretariat about the case. In a statement, the SSP-RS reported that “the Military Brigade is reinforcing the affected areas and making efforts to maintain the safety of the population at this time”, but did not give details about possible investigations. The government has not responded so far, but the space remains open.

Floods in RS

The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul updated, also this Tuesday (7), the death toll to 90 due to the storms that affected 80% of the state. The most recent bulletin also points out that there are other deaths under investigation, while 132 missing and 361 injured were also reported.
