Buenos Aires (Argentina) – Last Sunday, Argentine Diego Schwartzman announced on social media that he will retire next year in Argentina. The 31-year-old won 250 matches at ATP level and won four titles, the biggest of which was at the 2020 Rio Open, the year in which he was able to compete in the prestigious ATP Finals.

“How many moments I never imagined, how many anecdotes I never dreamed of, how many people I met who helped me grow, who taught me so much, who made me a much better player and person than anyone ever believed I would be, including me really”, wrote the Argentine.

“Every corner of the court, every second training session, every point played, every moment I was immensely happy. I experienced this with such intensity that today it is difficult to maintain. All these beautiful moments became something that today has weight and is difficult for me to continue enjoying fully”, added Schwartzman.

The Argentine highlighted that leaving professional tennis is a very difficult decision, but that lately it was difficult to keep a smile on the court. “I want my last tournaments to be my decision. May 2024 be like this, I hope to have the opportunity to compete in the tournaments I like most. And in 2025, in Argentina, I will be able to have my final moment, the most beautiful closure I can imagine.”

His coaches, physical trainers and physiotherapists received due thanks, as well as rivals, teammates. Schwartzman also spoke about the importance of friends, family and the people he loves, who have helped a lot on his journey. “Without you, nothing would have happened,” commented Schwartzman.

“Tennis gave me everything I have and much more that I will carry with me forever. It has been a wonderful journey and you have been a vital part of it. That’s why I wanted to communicate here and thank you because ‘El Peque’ had a giant life. See you soon tennis, to continue sweating until the last drop and working like a professional until the last point I have to play on the court”, he concluded.
