Cagliari (Italy) – With a very unusual outcome, Gabriel Sidney from Paraná won the ITF M25 doubles title in Santa Margherita di Pula, on Italian clay. Forming the main partnership of the tournament alongside Argentine Mariano Kestelboim, the Brazilian was supposed to have a double day this Saturday, but ended up having to give up on two partnerships to lift the trophy.

First, Argentine Juan Otegui and Spaniard Carlos Jover, seeded 4th in the competition, withdrew from the semifinal. Soon after, Gabriel and Mariano didn’t even need to enter the court to face the Germans Kai Wehnelt and Patrick Zahraj, third pre-classified, in the decision, as they also abandoned the dispute.

Interestingly, Sidney and Kestelboim had already benefited in the first round with the withdrawal of the Italians Fabio De Michele and Marco Furlanetto in the second set, when the South American duo was winning 6/2 and 3/3. The only complete game they played in the tournament was in the quarter-finals against the North American Joseph Bishop and the Dutch Marcel Sudzum, winning with a double 6/3.

At 27 years old, the tennis player from Curitiba reaches his ninth career title in doubles and his third at M25 level, all won on clay. He also has six M15 trophies, five on clay and one on synthetic flooring. Currently with the best ranking of his career, occupying 289th place, he is expected to drop around 30 positions next Monday, as the points from Santa Margherita di Pula will only be counted in two weeks.
