Cagliari (Italy) – After a long delay in the schedule due to rain, Orlando Luz from Rio Grande do Sul finally debuted in the doubles bracket of the Cagliari challenger, on Italian clay. Luz and North American Evan King beat the tournament’s top seeds, Julian Cash and Robert Galloway, this Thursday, by 7/6 (7-3) and 7/5.

At 26 years old, Orlando Luz appears in 109th place in the ATP doubles ranking and his best career ranking is 90th place. He is trying to join four other Brazilians who are in the top 100 in the sport, Marcelo Melo, Rafael Matos, Fernando Romboli and Marcelo Zormann.

Luz and King’s opponents in the semifinals will be Bolivian Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos. In case of victory, they could face in the semifinals the Germans Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens, seeds 4, or the Czech Petr Nouza and the Mexican Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela.

Doubles say goodbye to the challenger gaucho

For the Brasil Tennis Open, a challenger tournament played in Porto Alegre, the Brazilians said goodbye in the quarterfinals. Karue Sell from Santa Catarina and 15-year-old youth from Goiás Luis Augusto Miguel were beaten by Dominican Roberto Cid Subervi and Japanese Kaichi Uchida by 7/6 (7-2) and 6/3.

São Paulo native Luis Britto and his Argentine partner Gonzalo Villanueva couldn’t resist a double round.
