Super Mundial: see which clubs are in the fight for the remaining six places

O FIFA Club Super World Cup, which will have 32 participants and will be played for the first time in 2025, in the United States, already has 26 classified. There are six vacancies remaining: three from South America, one from Asia, one for Concacaf (Confederation of North and Central America) and one nomination from the host country.

South America

The champion of Liberators cup 2024 will be in the Super World Cup. Therefore, the 29 teams participating in the current edition, excluding Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense, already classified, can travel to the USA next year. This includes the Athletic and the other three Brazilian participants, Grêmio, São Paulo and Botafogo.

According to the competition regulations, each country can only have two participants, unless more teams win the continental club championship. This is the case of Brazil, for example, with the last three Libertadores champions.

As in South America there are six vacancies in total, four for the last Libertadores champions and two via ranking, in addition to the 2024 winner, two more teams will enter through this ranking. If Palmeiras, Flamengo or Fluminense win, a third place in the ranking will open, which cannot be for Brazilians. Argentines River Plate and Boca Juniors are well placed, with Olimpia-PAR right behind.

The Libertadores final will be on November 30, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Asia

One remaining place is between Al Ain, from the United Arab Emirates, and Yokohama Marinos, from Japan. The two teams are in the final of the Asian Champions League and face each other in two matches.

The departure will be on May 11th, in Japan, and the return on May 25th, in the Middle East.

North and Central America

Pachuca, from Mexico, and Columbus Crew, from the United States, compete for one remaining spot. The Concachampions final in a single confrontation, at the home of the Mexicans, who had the best campaign, will be on June 2nd.

Host country

The criteria to be used to nominate the representative of the host country has not yet been disclosed, but the greatest probability, as determined by the Itatiaia, is that the most logical solution is used and the champion of the current edition of Major League Soccer (MLS), the main professional football championship in the USA, is chosen. MLS 2024 ends in early December.

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami leads the Eastern Conference, after 11 games, with 21 points, while Real Salt Lake leads the Western Conference, with 18 points. The 29 participants play 37 games in the regular season, with the top seven from each of the two conferences advancing to the playoffs. Eighth and ninth play a repechage. Therefore, there is still a lot of championship to be played.

The new World Cup

The first edition will be in the United States, between June 15 and July 13, 2025. Stadiums and cities where the games will take place have yet to be announced.

Of the 32 participants, 26 have already been classified. Between June and July this year, FIFA expects 28 teams to be known for the group draw. The nominee for the host country and the three remaining South Americans would still be defined, which will only be decided in November 2024.

FIFA management projects revenue of US$2.5 billion (R$ 12.4 billion) for the new Club World Cup. The tournament will be held every four years, with the following distribution of places: 12 from Europe, six from South America, four from North and Central America, four from Africa, four from Asia, one from Oceania and another representing the host country.

The clubs will be divided into eight groups of four teams, with the top two from each going through to the round of 16, and from there the clashes will be eliminatory, until the final.
