Disclosure: Orlando Luz

This Thursday morning (2), the first round of the Challenger doubles took place in Cagliari, Italy. Brazilian Orlando Luz took to the court alongside American Evan King and faced the duo Julian Cash, from Great Britain, and Robert Galloway, from the United States. The opponents were the tournament’s number 1 seeds, but they were no match against the Orlando team who won the duel 2-0, with scores of 7-6 and 7-5.

The game

Earning a place in the quarterfinals, Luz and King started the match hot and in the first game they managed to break their opponents’ serve. Consistently, the Brazilian duo still had an opportunity to beat the opponent’s service in the fifth game, but saw Cash and Galloway save the point. Afterwards, the favorites in Cagliari returned a break and tied the match. The two pairs then confirmed their services and forced the dispute into a tie-break. There, Orlando Luz and Evan King came from behind 3-1, but did not allow any more points from their rivals and won 7-3.

If the first partial was quite balanced, the second was even tighter. The two teams did not give chances to break in any of the first ten games. The match was heading towards another tie-break contest, but Luz and King managed to take advantage of the first break opportunity in the eleventh and took a 6-5 lead. Thus, they served to close the match and won 2-0.

Next confrontation

With today’s result, Orlando Luz and Evan King advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cagliari Challenger. Now, they face the Bolivian duo Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos. The match is scheduled for this Friday (3), but with no set time. Finally, it is worth remembering that the other Brazilian present in the doubles contest, Fernando Romboli, lost in his debut and is out of the contest.
