Oscar Piastri called on McLaren to resolve the inconsistency of the MCL38 in the 2024 Formula 1 season. Despite two podiums for Lando Norris and third place in the constructors’ world championship, the Woking team has been alternating between good and bad performances.
The team exceeded expectations in China, taking second place with Norris, but performed well below expectations in the previous race in Suzuka. Piastri himself has a best result of fourth place in the first five races.
For the Australian, it is essential that McLaren understands the reasons for the variations in performance to fight with Ferrari for second place in the championship.
“We need to understand why we are fast on some days and slow on others,” Piastri told Autosport. “I think we have some good ideas, but we need to confirm that our hypotheses are correct.”
“We thought we would have a lot of difficulty in China, so it was encouraging to see Lando second on a track that we believed to be unfavorable. It’s exciting for the future, and with new parts coming to the car, these are encouraging signs,” he said.
“Clearly, we excel on some days and suffer more on others, and that doesn’t seem to be related to the track layout at the moment. In Japan, for example, where we expected to do well, it was our weakest race of the year, as well as in Bahrain. In China, where we anticipated difficulties, we had our best result. Further investigation needs to be done,” he added.
Piastri admits his frustration with the irregularity, but highlights the positive side of the unexpected result in China. “It’s a little irritating, this ups and downs. But being well when you expect to be bad is encouraging. We just need to fully understand why. If we can do this, we will have a basis to focus and evolve”, concluded the Australian driver.
