“It’s Corinthians’ best game of the season”, highlights Rizek

The expansion of the right to vote in Corinthians is an old debate, but it will heat up again in 2024. After frustrated attempts, a statutory reform commission was formed again this year and has already completed the first stage of work.

Among the many changes to the statute that are discussed by this committee is the permission for members of the Fiel Torcedor program to vote (as long as they are up to date with their monthly payments and have a minimum membership period).

Currently, only members of the social club for more than five years have the right to participate in general assemblies and elect Corinthians president and advisors. Last year, 4184 people attended the election. Considering that Timão has 32 million fans, this number represents 0.013% of the faithful fans.

Two weeks ago the deadline for Corinthians partners and advisors to submit suggestions for changes to the statutes passed. Now, the debate phase of the proposals begins:

– We will begin public hearings with club members and the masses of fans to hear proposals. Then, we moved on to the drafting of the articles by the statute reform committee. We are at an advanced stage, it still takes some time, but a big step has been taken – explained Romeu Tuma Jr, president of the Corinthians Deliberative Council.

The final text with suggested changes to the statute must be presented by the second half of August. After that, it will be voted on by the Deliberative Council and, subsequently, by the general assembly of members.

Antônio Goulart, president of the statutory reform commission, understands that this process needs to be completed in 2024, the first year of the term of office of the current Board and the club’s president, Augusto Melo.

Influential people in Corinthians politics understand that it is difficult to approve a statutory reform that expands the right to vote at the club. They argue that even if the Council agrees to such a change, it will not have support from members.

Will there be changes to the Corinthians football board?

At Corinthians, there are those who argue that, instead of allowing fan members to have the right to vote, the club encourages the addition of new members to its membership. To do this, however, it is necessary to purchase a title. In addition to the financial issue, this proposal comes up against the physical capacity of Parque São Jorge, which has already been full on hot weekends.

Aware that expanding the right to vote is a thorny issue, Romeu Tuma Jr is thinking about “slicing up” the statutory reform. More technical and less controversial issues would be decided in a unified manner by the Council. The topics on which there are more divergences would be analyzed separately, in order to prevent all changes from being blocked. After that, the approved articles would go to the members for approval.

Corinthians’ organized fans have as their banner the expansion of voting rights at the club. In recent meetings with the black and white board, leaders of these associations reinforced their desire for change.

Whenever he is asked about the subject, president Augusto Melo says he is in favor of greater democratization of the club, but considers that the statutory change is not his responsibility.

– Since 2018, we have had the proposal to give the right to vote to the first dependent, because today only the holder has the right. This would increase membership attendance and bring families into the club. We want to change the statute at the beginning of the administration, to reduce the grace period from five to three years for the new member to have the right to vote – he said in 2023, before being elected, on the Gaviões da Fiel YouTube channel.

– Sooner or later the Faithful Fan will have to have the right (to vote). This does not depend on the president; It will depend on the Council, after the general assembly, but my vote carries weight. Let’s try to work so that the Faithful Fan has the right to vote – added Augusto Melo.
