Beatriz Ferreira beats Argentine and is champion in professional boxing

After being two-time world champion in Olympic boxing, the time has come for Bia Ferreira to conquer the world as a professional. On Saturday afternoon, the Brazilian defeated Argentine Yanina Del Carmen Lescano, in Liverpool, in the fight for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt. The fight was stopped in the sixth round because the Brazilian’s opponent was bleeding too much and the fight was ended.

With the victory, Bia Ferreira took the first step towards achieving the ambitious goal she set for 2024. She wants to be the first in history to be world champion in professional boxing and win an Olympic medal in the same year. In July, she will compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as the favorite for gold in the under 60 kg category.

“I am really happy. I reached my goal, but the fight didn’t go as we planned. Now the goal is to become an Olympic champion. And I promise that the next fight will be better than this one”, said Bia Ferreira, who didn’t really like her performance, especially in the first three of the six rounds of the fight. “I wasn’t distracted at all (because of the Olympics). I was very focused on the belt. I love Liverpool”, the Brazilian ventured into English. “Brazil, I represented. I’m taking home another world title. Thank you for your strength and energy. Given mission is accomplished mission. It’s definitely the first of many!,” she promised.

The fight

The first round was mostly studying, but Lescano ended up getting the better of the exchange of blows. At halftime, coach Mateus Alves caught the Brazilian’s attention. “Play lower (from the waist line) and be more attentive in defense”, he warned.

Bia Ferreira came back better in the second round, landing a good follow-up on her opponent and a strong left to the chin. But, in the third round, the Brazilian exchanged some blows with her guard down and was hit a few times. “You are very inattentive in defense and throwing yourself too much into strikes. You have to impose yourself”, complained Mateus Alves.

After another scolding from the coach, Bia Ferreira continued the fight. With hard blows to the waistline, the Brazilian realized what the Argentine was feeling and went for it. In the fifth round, the dominance was complete and Yanina Del Carmen Lescano’s eyebrow bled after an unintentional headbutt she suffered.

In the sixth round, Beatriz Ferreira again punished her opponent, who began to bleed even more. Because of this, the fight was stopped and, after analyzing Lescano’s condition, the referee decided to end the fight that was scheduled for ten rounds.

As the interruption was caused by an accidental blow, Beatriz Ferreira’s victory was on points. The judges considered that the Brazilian had a better performance than her rival in the six rounds of the confrontation.
