John Textor, owner of SAF do Botafogo, was punished by the STJD (Supreme Court of Sports Justice) in a session held in the early afternoon of this Friday in Rio de Janeiro. The North American was suspended for 45 days and fined R$100,000 for statements made after the defeat to Palmeiras in November last year.

The sentence prohibits the American from participating in places reserved for football on Glorioso game days. This is the usual punishment for this type of case. Any kind of extra restrictions would have to be defined in court.

In other words, Textor will not be able to enter Nilton Santos for the next 17 days, whether accredited as president of the SAF, invited to a box or even as a fan on game days. This is because he has already served 28 of the 45 total sentences.

The businessman will continue to be able to represent Botafogo when there is no place reserved for football on game day and sign contracts during this period.

Michel Assef Filho, the American’s lawyer, considered the result satisfactory, considering that the court rapporteur voted for a 105-day suspension at the first hearing of the appeal. The full court postponed the trial twice.

– It is necessary to create tools for justice to act, so that the leader can speak out. I think the discussion is deeper here. There is no victory or defeat, we all seek a common good, which is football.

The executive was not present at the scene. He returned to Florida, in the United States, during the early hours of the morning.

John was judged for his speeches on the sidelines after the defeat to Palmeiras, on November 1, 2023. Botafogo was winning the match 3-1, when Adryelson was sent off at the beginning of the second half.

Tiquinho Soares still had a penalty afterwards, but wasted it and saw Alviverde turn the match around with goals in the 84th, 89th and 99th minutes. After the match, Textor entered the field, made money signs to the referees and used the broadcast microphone to criticize the CBF.

– The whole world saw it, this is not a red card. He (Adryelson) got the ball first. I’m not even sure if it was a foul. But it’s not a red card, he changed the game. This is corruption, this is theft. Please fine me, Ednaldo, but you need to resign tomorrow morning. That’s what needs to happen. This championship has become a joke. Nobody deserves this, these Palmeiras players don’t want to win like that, we don’t want to lose like that. There are five games in a row. Gentlemen, you played a good game, it’s not your fault, but this is corruption – he said at the time (see video below).

The process has been ongoing since last year, when Textor was preventively punished for 30 days. At the time, Botafogo had achieved a suspensive effect so that the executive could follow the final stretch of the Brasileirão. The election resurfaced this year, but there were two requests for review by Felipe Bevilacqua, vice-president of the STJD, who asked for more time to analyze the process.
