Madrid (Spain) – After win his second game at the Madrid Masters 1000, Thiago Wild highlighted the solidity shown in the match against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, 29th in the ranking, this Friday. Classified for the third round, the number 1 in Brazil and 63rd in the world will challenge next Sunday the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, third in the ranking and two-time champion of the tournament.

“It’s going to be a battle. Alcaraz needs no comments, it is one of the best we have today. But as I always say, it’s game by game, we have to get on the court and compete. Whoever is better on the day wins”, said Wild, who is looking for his second victory against the top 10 in his career and trying to reach the round of 16 of a Masters 1000 for the first time. He has already repeated the Indian Wells and Miami campaigns.

Victory over Musetti in the second round

The 24-year-old from Paraná spoke about his victory over Musetti by double 6/4. During the game, Wild suffered no breaks, escaped the four break-points he faced and took advantage of a break chance in each set. The match marked the reunion between the two tennis players, six years after the US Open youth final, won by the Brazilian.

“I think the difference for this game was my solidity. I managed to be very solid in the important moments. I had some break-points against, but I kept calm and played to the standard I had agreed with Duda (Matos, coach)”, said Wild, who has not yet lost sets in Madrid. In his debut, he had defeated Russian Roman Safiullin, 42nd in the rankings, also by double 6/4.

“I’m happy to come out with the victory, third round in Masters 1000. But you have to keep working, with your feet on the ground as the tournament continues”, added the Paraná native. The campaign means he has 50 ATP points and can once again have the best ranking of his career. The official projection currently indicates a gain of two positions, which would take him to 61st place.
