Thiago Wild dispatched another top-50 from the Madrid Open. After beating Russian Roman Safiullin (42nd in the rankings), the Brazilian beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti this Friday, 29th in the ATP rankings and 28th seed in the Masters 1,000 – splits of 6/4 and 6/4. Thus, the number 1 in Brazil and 63rd in the world advanced to the third round on clay in Madrid and will face the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. Defending his title, the Spaniard ran over Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko this Friday.
With the result, Wild equaled his best record in Masters 1,000-level tournaments – he also reached the third round at Indian Wells and Miami this year. The Brazilian now faces Carlos Alcaraz. It will be the first duel between the two tennis players on the ATP world circuit.
This Friday, Thiago Wild showed very aggressive tennis and managed to reverse the course of the game well when under pressure. In both sets, the Brazilian saved break points and in the next game he broke the Italian. It was the difference for the double 6/4.
Carlos Alcaraz, in turn, debuted in the second round as he was the second seed in the tournament. The Spaniard began his title defense by defeating Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets – partials of 6/2 and 6/1.
