Augusto Melo, president of Corinthians, demands players and does not rule out director departure
Amid the crisis experienced on and off the field, Corinthians is experiencing uncertainty in the men’s football department.
Last Saturday, after the defeat to Bragantino, president Augusto Melo promised a “change in everything”. The phrase was given in response to a question about the possible departure of Rubens Gomes, known as Rubão, as football director. However, to date, he remains in post.
With dengue fever, Rubão has been absent from his daily life since last week. He was left out of the trips to Bragança Paulista and Buenos Aires, where Corinthians lost to Argentinos Jrs, last Tuesday.
Behind the scenes at the club, there is speculation that Augusto Melo may wait until Monday to make changes to the department. It would be a way to avoid increasing the political crisis before the Deliberative Council meeting that will vote on the club’s accounts in 2023.
The eventual dismissal of Rubão could generate a split in Augusto’s support base on the eve of an important moment in the club’s politics.
The football director was the main political coordinator of his candidacy and is a long-time ally. That’s why there are doubts about his downfall, although Augusto indicated his departure. There are people with Corinthians traffic who do not rule out a reconciliation between the top hats.

To allies, the black and white president has said that executive director Fabinho Soldado is prestigious and is not at risk in his position. He has also refused to fire coach António Oliveira, who has been under pressure after three consecutive defeats.
Some technicians were appointed to Augusto in recent days, but the president has not shown any signs that he intends to make a change now.
It is in this scenario that Corinthians prepares to face Fluminense, Sunday, at 4pm, at Neo Química Arena.
