Many people sent us messages asking what the documentary was going to be about. Shortly before the elections, Stone posted an open letter telling a little more about the project.

The project will delve into the period of the Lula and his return to power.

I went to Brazil and Argentina the week before last to meet with Lula. At 75 years old, Lula is eager to participate in these dramatic elections in October 2022. His main opponents are the strongly right-wing “law and disorder” president, Jair Bolsonaro, and another right-wing party, Sergio Moro. Both prosecuted and tried Lula and sent him to prison on trumped-up “corruption” charges to keep him out of the 2018 presidential elections – and then briefly became Bolsonaro’s Minister of Justice. It’s the US’s new way of intervening in other people’s affairs – with the help of its collaborators in those countries. It is called “lawfare”, which means destroying the reputation of a man or a nation through prolonged legal action, especially around issues of “corruption”. To put it bluntly, judges and prosecutors have replaced the generals and colonels of previous decades, acting with a clear political agenda.

Perhaps the most dangerous thing, in my opinion, is that there is a restless military in Brazil sanctified by Bolsonaro. Not even during the years of the dictatorship did the Brazilian army receive so much political and economic power. Bolsonaro’s government has more armed forces ministers than ever served under the dictatorship in 1964. His Chief of Staff, Hamilton Mourão, a retired four-star general, is seen by many as the responsible man to watch. I feel like there could be a coup at any moment. Get rid of the immature Bolsonaro and replace the military for a few more years. In light of all this, I am impressed by Lula’s courage. He’s not backing down. He feels that “the truth” will carry him – and millions of others are with him.

In an interview with AFPthe filmmaker declared that the documentary will explore “the judicial persecution and what happened when Lula was a successful president and they arrested him for corruption, which is how things usually happen in these countries”.

In addition to having directed classics such as ‘Platoon‘, ‘Wall Street – Power and Greed‘, ‘Natural Born Killers‘, the filmmaker also directed documentaries about emblematic figures such as Fidel Castro It is Hugo Chavez.
