The long-awaited return of Conor McGregor to the Octagon takes place on June 29th, at UFC 303, in Las Vegas (USA). And in the view of former champion and current Ultimate commentator, Daniel Cormier, the confrontation between the Irishman and michael chandler it could have an extra attraction – for the fans and, mainly, for the fighters themselves.

In a recent episode of the show ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’, Cormier suggested that the UFC Take advantage of the duel between McGregor and Chandler to put a new title at stake. For the former light heavyweight (93 kg) and heavyweight champion, this would be the perfect opportunity to implement the creation of another weight category in the organization chaired by Dana White.

“I believe that if they are going to make a division up to 165 pounds (74.8 kg), it should have a name attached to this category that is so big that it attracts people’s attention. Conor McGregor being that name. Michael Chandler, on the other hand, will benefit from being in the right place at the right time, where these guys would then fight for the super lightweight title, because that’s what I believe it to be. It’s only 10 pounds (4.5 kg) heavier than 155 (70 kg), so let’s call it the super-light division. Go from 170 to 175 (77 kg/79 kg), go from 185 to 195 (84 kg/88.4 kg), keep 205 (93 kg), keep heavyweight,” suggested Cormier.

Remote chances of a new division in the UFC

Despite the suggestion made by Daniel Cormier, the chances of the UFC opening a new category – at least at this moment – are slim. This is because, even if part of the community MMA consider the idea interesting, the president of the event, Dana White, is against the addition of more weight divisions in Ultimate.
