Madrid (Spain) – Although she is currently the WTA’s leading player when it comes to the clay season, with three Roland Garros titles under her belt, Polish Iga Swiatek knows that, even playing on her favorite surface, she cannot enter the court thinking that she will win every match, let alone every tournament, at this time of year.

“I never took these tournaments for granted, I even lost here last year and in Rome. We are competing against the best players in the world, it’s not like I’m going to win every tournament, even though it’s my favorite surface”, said the current runner-up of the WTA 1000 in Madrid, who will debut in the competition on Thursday at 2pm (Brasília time) against Chinese Xiyu Wang.

“The circuit is very tough, so it doesn’t mean anything that it’s my favorite surface. Furthermore, it’s not like we have unlimited time to train and work on various things, so sometimes you have to go with what you have each day”, added the Polish, who last year, after the runner-up in Madrid, fell in the quarterfinals in Rome and won Roland Garros once again.

Current number 1 in the world, Iga spoke about the century mark reached this week. She lost her lead last year, after the US Open, but regained her position with the WTA Finals title in Cancún. “It’s something I’m really proud of and I think sometimes we make some difficult decisions. I have good people who guide me and help me, so I certainly wouldn’t be here if I had done this alone. Returning to first place was very important and it happened unpredictably.”
