Olympic place for Brazil! Filipe Vieira Santana and Jacky Godmann secured, this Tuesday (23), a place in the Canoeing C2 500 meters for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The achievement came on the first day of the Pan-American Canoeing Sprint and Qualifying Championships Olympic Games of the Americas 2024, hosted in Florida, United States. Goodman and Vieira covered the 500 meters in 1min46s and got their passports stamped for Paris.

The competition features around 76 athletes, from 18 countries, who will be in North American waters. Over the three days of competition, Brazil will participate in 6 events in Florida: K2 Men 500 meters; C2 Men 500 meters; C1 Women 200 meters; C1 Men 500 meters; K1 Men 1000 meters and K1 Women 500 meters. Furthermore, all events offer two Olympic quotas for the winners, with the exception of the men’s C1.

Olympic place in canoeing

So, on Tuesday morning, four Brazilian athletes took action. In the first final contested, the men’s Canoe 500 meters, Filipe Vieira Santana and Jacky Godmann covered the 500 meters in 1min46s and came in first place and guaranteed their place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Canadians Alix Plomteux and Craig Spence came in second place, with 1min50s, while Colombians Daniel Alfonso and Alejandro Rodriguez completed the podium with 1min52.

“We are very happy, there was a lot of training in Brazil, in Lagoa Santa, and the result of all this was this Olympic place. I thank all my sponsors, coaches and teammates who supported the fans in Brazil”, commented Filipe Vieira.

“We had a great race, we started at the front and managed to maintain the lead. Now it’s time to continue training to arrive well prepared for the Olympic Games”, added Jacky Godmann.

Bronze on K2

Edson Isaias da Silva and Vagner Souta competed in the 500 meter kayak qualifier and advanced to the final of the competition. The Brazilians came second in heat 2 and fourth overall in the qualifiers, with a time of 1min38s. In the final, the duo Edson and Vagner improved their time and won the bronze medal with 1min33s027, just 47 thousandths of a second behind the Argentines Gonzalo Carreras and Manuel Orero. The great champions were the Americans Jonas Ecker and Aaron Small, with 1min31s750, and won the place in Paris.
