Yago Dora is the country’s best-placed athlete on the World Surfing Tour

The 2024 World Surfing League (WSL) season did not start well for Brazilians. The Bells Beach stage, in Australia, the fourth of the year, ended with victory for American Cole Houshmand. The updated ranking shows Yago Dora as the best placed in Brazil, but the surfer is only 16th on the planet.

The next stage, in Margaret River, also in Australia, is the last before the mid-season cut, which leaves only the 22 best surfers in contention for a place in the WSL Finals. At the moment, only Brazilians Yago Dora (16th), Ítalo Ferreira (18th) and Gabriel Medina (20th) would remain in the competition. Samuel Pupo (25th), Miguel Pupo (26th), Caio Ibelli (29th) and Deivid Silva (32nd) would depend on an excellent performance in the next event to enter the classification zone.

Last year, the country had, in addition to this year’s top three, Caio Ibelli, João Chianca and current two-time champion Filipe Toledo among the “survivors” of the cut. It is worth remembering that Chumbinho has not yet competed in the season as he is recovering from the accident he suffered at the end of last year. Filipinho, in turn, abandoned the WSL 2024 contest to take care of his mental health.
