Despite Alpine’s delicate moment, which is facing a performance crisis, Pierre Gasly is considering the possibility of remaining at the French team in the long term.
After a turbulent period of team management changes last year, Alpine emerged from the 2024 Formula 1 pre-season with what appears to be the slowest car on the grid. Gasly recognizes that recovery will not be immediate.
“We are not looking at two or three weeks, but rather four or six months,” said the French driver.
While Esteban Ocon, the Alpine driver managed by Toto Wolff, harbors a desire for a possible move to Mercedes in 2025, Gasly may be setting his sights on an even more distant horizon: the new 2026 rules.
Renault currently has the least powerful engine in its category. However, McLaren driver Lando Norris highlights that all teams and manufacturers are turning to the new engine regulations for 2026.
“Significant changes can happen for any team, probably mainly in relation to the power unit,” said the McLaren driver.
There are rumors that apprehension over Red Bull’s powertrain project for 2026, which is being developed by Red Bull Powertrains and will be partnered with Ford, is one of the reasons why Max Verstappen is considering a transfer to Mercedes or even same for Aston Martin.
“I know both sides,” said Gasly. “The factory team and the customer. And of course, the ceiling is higher for the factory team”, said the driver according to Speed Week. “There is no limit if you are a manufacturer. You can set your own limits and invest as much as you want.”
However, it is inevitable that Alpine’s current poor performance and instability may simply continue from 2025 to 2026, but Gasly said: “It’s not that we don’t know what we’re doing or that the car concept doesn’t work, but It is essential that we find solutions and understand what is happening”, concluded the French driver.
