Former owner of Minardi sees a promising future for the now RB

-

Paul Stoddart, former owner of the now-defunct Minardi Formula 1 team, believes Red Bull’s acquisition of the team exceeded all expectations.

Stoddart ran the Italian team between 2001 and 2005, before selling it to Dietrich Mateschitz, owner of Red Bull. Since then, the team has undergone several reformulations, becoming Toro Rosso, AlphaTauri, and currently, RB.

RB now has its own sponsors for the first time since 2006 and a pair of drivers formed by Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo.

“When I sold the team at the end of 2005, there were two stipulations,” Stoddart told Speedcafe. “First, the team should remain in Faenza. The second, that employees were well looked after. Dietrich not only met but exceeded expectations.”

“In Faenza, the factory occupies practically the entire block. We used to have the main office, which was the original Minardi building, and then we had a carbon center where we did all the autoclaves. I believe they now have everything. The team is in a good place. It has revealed fantastic talents over the years, such as Max (Verstappen), Daniel (Ricciardo) among others,” he added.

Stoddart sees potential for RB to fight for podiums in the current season. “The package they have is good enough for that. The drivers they have… Daniel needs to regain his confidence, but he is a good driver and is riding below what he can.”

“I’m more than proud, but that’s because of who I sold the team to, someone who would always look after it. Unfortunately, Mateschitz passed away and I really miss him, because he was one of the greats”, concluded Stoddart.
