Guilherme Ribeiro stands out among the Portuguese in the second men’s round of the Caparica Surf Fest

Last Wednesday, March 27th, was marked by bad weather in Portugal, so the Caparica Surf Fest organization chose to finish only the men’s round 2, where there were only four heats left. This event is the last stage of the European Qualifying Season, and is taking place in Costa da Caparica, with the participation of several Portuguese people. Men’s round 2 began last Tuesday, March 26th.

Joaquim Chaves and João Mendonça entered heat 2, and both passed with tenths of a difference – Mendonça won with 11.63 points (out of 20 possible), and Chaves came in 2nd with 11 points. Soon after, Portugal suffered its first loss, with Afonso Pinto, who came in 4th place in his heat, behind Thomas Ledee (1st), Dylan Groen (2nd) and Bitor Garitaonandia (3rd). Martim Nunes, in heat 3, was also defeated, in a heat that saw Kauli Vaast win. Keoni Lasa came 2nd.

Martim Fortes raised spirits in heat 6, coming 2nd behind an impressive Arran Strong, whose best wave was a 7.50 (out of 10 possible) and whose total score was 13.73 points. In heat 8, Francisco Ordonhas and Martim Paulino entered. The victory went to Maxime Huscenot, with Ordonhas taking 2nd. Paulino came in 4th place, behind Malakay Hagley. The Portuguese highlight of the round appeared in heat 12, in the form of Guilherme Ribeiro. With a best wave of 7.50 points and a total of 12.33, the Portuguese won his heat, with Tristan Guilbaud coming in 2nd.

Afonso Antunes wins in a short day of competition

The round was interrupted here, to be carried out yesterday, March 27th. When the action then resumed, Afonso Antunes competed in heat 14, and won, with Yago Dominguez in 2nd place. Before the day ended, Portugal suffered another defeat in round 2, in heat 15. Francisco Queimado came in 3rd place, behind Justin Becret, who came in 1st, and Teva Bouchgua, who came in 2nd.

In men’s round 3 we will have João Mendonça in heat 1, Joaquim Chaves in heat 2, Francisco Ordonhas in heat 3, Martim Fortes in heat 4, Guilherme Ribeiro in heat 6 and Afonso Antunes in heat 7.

The first women’s round concluded

On Tuesday, March 26th, in addition to the start of men’s round 2, the women’s inaugural round also took place. The first Portuguese to enter was Maria Salgado, in heat 2, who came 2nd, behind Sarah Leiceaga. In heat 3 we saw the defeat of Erica Máximo. Aelan Vaast won strongly, with a best wave of 7.17 points and a total of 13.84 points, and Lilias Tebbai came 2nd. Camila Cardoso lost in heat 4, behind Lucia Machado (1st) and Mirna Boelsma (2nd).

Teresa Pereira and Beatriz Costa were also eliminated, in heats 6 and 8, respectively. In heat 6, Leticia Canales Bilbao (1st) and Ellie Turner (2nd) passed; in heat 8 they passed Nahia Milhau (1st) and Lilou Rumiel (2nd).

In women’s round 2 we have Teresa Bonvalot, Lua Escudeiro and Maria Salgado in heat 1, Mafalda Lopes in heat 2, Francisca Veselko in heat 3, Yolanda Hopkins and Maria Dias in heat 5 and Carolina Mendes in heat 7. All information about the event can be found here.
