Several parts of Porto Alegre were affected by the flood

Satellite images captured by NASA, the United States space agency, show the impact of storms in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, following the floods. The photos were released this Thursday (9).

Records show how the Farrapos, São Geraldo, Centro and Menino Deus neighborhoods are covered by flooding. In addition, water appears at the Inter and Grêmio stadiums and at Salgado Filho Airport.

A montage made by NASA also shows what the capital of Rio Grande do Sul was like before the tragedy.

The first photo was taken on April 20th and the second on May 6th, after the storms. See below:

Before and after Porto Alegre was hit by storms

Tragedy

According to the latest bulletin released by Civil Defense, the storms that hit Rio Grande do Sul left 107 dead and 370 injured. There are also 136 missing, in addition to 164,500 homeless people and 67,500 people in shelters.

The storms began on April 29th and have caused damage to properties and increased levels of rivers and streams, leaving many people homeless.

Calamity

On May 1st, Rio Grande do Sul declared a state of public calamity due to “weather events involving intense rain”.

The meteorological events caused “human damage, with the loss of lives, and material and environmental damage, with the destruction of homes, roads and bridges, as well as compromising the functioning of local and regional public institutions and the closure of public roads”, describes the decree signed by the governor.
