A landing strip was improvised on the BR-116 highway this Tuesday afternoon (7) to receive a small plane with donations for Guaíba, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, one of the cities affected by the historic flood in Rio Grande do Sul. South.

A group of businesspeople from Rio de Janeiro sent 300 liters of water, medicine and non-perishable food. The highway is closed to vehicle traffic and so it was possible to transform it into an airstrip.

Other planes are expected to arrive in the coming days with donations for the local population.

Guaíba also received this Tuesday 20 tons of food donated by businesspeople from Itapema, in Santa Catarina. The products will be sent to 70 shelters that currently house more than 11 thousand residents of neighboring Eldorado do Sul, a city that was completely flooded.

Thirty volunteers formed a human chain to transport the food to the city hall.

After serving as an improvised landing strip, BR-116 was temporarily opened for the arrival of a truck with donations.

“It was the first truck that arrived in our city”, said Mayor Marcelo Maranata (PDT). “We had zero (food) stock.”

According to him, the city needs donations because the shelters are expected to continue operating for several days to keep residents safe who cannot return to their homes.

The most needed products are rice, beans, oil, pasta, milk, sugar and coffee.

This Tuesday (7), Rio Grande do Sul reached the mark of 95 deaths due to the heavy rains that hit the region over the last week. In total, 1.4 million people were affected by the tragedy in the region.
