“I’m going to put the truck on a floodplain football field, people will go there to get water and also take their canisters, take their bottles because I can’t afford to go from house to house”, he said.

“There is not enough water stored. The water supply in Rio Grande do Sul has decreased a lot.”

The top priority at the moment, however, is saving lives and removing people from risk areas. According to Mayor Sebastião Melo, there are more than 60 shelters in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, where 9 thousand people are affected by the flood.

Storms caused damage in 70% of the territory of Rio Grande do Sul: 345 of the 496 recorded some type of damage. Part of the population is without electricity, water and faces difficulty in getting around due to flooding and blockages of streets, avenues and roads.

According to the Civil Defense survey, there are 141.3 thousand people away from home, 19.3 thousand in shelters and 121.9 thousand homeless (in the homes of family or friends). In total, 345 of the state’s 496 municipalities recorded some type of problem, affecting 850,000 people.

The government declared a state of calamity, a situation that was recognized by the federal government. With this, the state is able to request federal resources for civil defense actions, such as humanitarian assistance, reconstruction of infrastructure and restoration of essential services.

Civil Defense placed most of the state’s river basins at risk of water rising above the flood level.

The rain forecast for the middle of this week extends the state of alert. According to Climatempo Meteorologia, the advance of a new cold front will once again cause an increase in heavy rain conditions. The possibility of increasing cold could make rescues difficult.

Meteorologists claim that the storms that occur in Rio Grande do Sul are a reflection of at least three phenomena that occur in the region, aggravated by climate change.

The storms that hit Rio Grande do Sul have already left 83 people dead, according to the bulletin released by the Civil Defense this Monday morning (6). Another 4 deaths are being investigated. In addition, there are 111 missing and 276 injured people (find out more at the end of the report).
