Brazil’s debt rises to 75.7% of GDP, highest since April 2022

It rose 0.2 percentage points in March, according to the BC; in values, it corresponds to R$ 8.3 trillion

Brazil’s gross debt rose to 75.7% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and reached the highest level since April 2022. The level was recorded in March after increasing 0.2 percentage points compared to February. The BC (Central Bank) released the result this Monday (May 6, 2024). The DBGG (Central Government Gross Debt) is formed by the federal government, INSS (National Social Security Institute) and state and municipal governments. According to the BC, the debt increased 0.6 percentage points due to the payment of nominal interest, but fell 0.2 percentage points with the net redemption of debt and 0.2 percentage points with the variation in nominal GDP.

In the 12 months up to March, the debt increased by 4.2 percentage points. In 2024, the increase was 1.3 percentage points.

PUBLIC ACCOUNTS

The consolidated public sector – made up of the Union, States, municipalities and state-owned companies – recorded a primary surplus of R$1.2 billion in March.

When including debt interest payments in the calculation, the consolidated public sector recorded a nominal deficit of R$63 billion in March. In the 12-month period, the negative balance fell from R$1.015 trillion in February to R$998.6 billion in March.
