Lula releases 3 times more amendments than Bolsonaro, allocating R$14 billion in election years

The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva released three times more parliamentary amendments than Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in a year of municipal elections. The data was released after the Executive concluded this Tuesday, 30th, the first stage of commitment to parliamentary amendments. In total, R$14 billion were released between January and April 2024. In the same period of 2020, between January and April 2020, the amount pledged by Bolsonaro was R$4.18 billion. The data comes from the Secretariat for Institutional Relations, under the command of Minister Alexandre Padilha.

“We will continue working hard because June 30th is our deadline to be able to transfer resources to the municipalities. And the federal government will continue to accelerate”, stated the minister.

According to the minister, between January and April 30 last year, the government had committed around R$350 million to amendments. The release of resources takes place amid tension between the government and Congress, with the Executive being pressured by parliamentarians to release funds and approve controversial agendas, such as the Quinquênio PEC, which favors judges, members of the Public Ministry and other professional categories.

Commitment marks the first stage of spending, when the government commits to a specific payment. The effective release of funds occurs at a later time. Amendments represent the main instrument through which parliamentarians direct resources to their electoral strongholds.
