Pacheco calls an extraordinary meeting to react to Zanin’s decision, which suspended the payroll tax exemption

247 – The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), scheduled two meetings to discuss the suspension of parts of the law that extended the payroll tax exemption. The meetings are scheduled to take place this Friday (26), reports Metrópoles.

On Thursday (25), the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Cristiano Zanin suspended parts of the law that address payroll tax relief. The minister is the rapporteur of the Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) filed by the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) with the aim of invalidating the effects of Law No. 14,784/2023, which grants the benefit.

The first meeting called by Pacheco will bring together Senate consultancy and legal counsel for a detailed analysis of the matter. In addition, party leaders will be summoned extraordinarily to participate in discussions on the topic.

The payroll tax relief measure benefits 17 sectors with tax reductions, in addition to including municipalities, which would continue paying 8% in charges instead of the expected 20%. The Ministry of Finance estimates that this measure could impact public accounts by up to R$10 billion.

The text of the payroll tax relief law was approved by the Senate in October 2023. However, a month later, President Lula (PT) vetoed the project in its entirety. In December of the same year, Congress overturned the veto, and Law No. 14,784/2023 came into force.
