247 – Portugal signaled its willingness to repair the costs arising from slavery and indigenous massacres in Brazil, after centuries of demands from the black population. The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, celebrated the recognition as a significant milestone in the global debate on historical justice.

“This is an important fight for Brazil and also globally,” highlighted the minister in an interview with g1. “This declaration needs to be followed by concrete actions, as the president himself seems to be committing to do”, he added.

On Tuesday night (23), Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assumed Portugal’s historic responsibility for the damage caused to Brazil, including massacres of indigenous people, slavery of millions of Africans and looting of goods. This is the first time that a Portuguese president has confirmed this guilt, marking a significant change in the country’s official stance.

Minister Anielle Franco revealed that the Ministry of Racial Equality has already contacted the Portuguese government to collaborate in the development of accessory measures.
