Athens is covered by a cloud of dust coming from the Sahara desert

Dust clouds that appeared in North Africa covered part of Greece and turned the sky of Athens orange on Tuesday (23). A video shows the Greek capital with a dark sunset. Watch above.

The clouds formed after strong winds carried dust from the Sahara Desert across the Mediterranean Sea to the European continent.

In Athens, Tuesday was marked by heat, with temperatures above 30ºC. Thermometers in the capital were up to 20ºC above what was recorded in the north of the country.

The wind also fueled environmental fires that hit Greece. At least 25 outbreaks were identified by firefighters across the country on Tuesday.

In addition, three people were arrested on suspicion of accidentally starting a fire. No deaths or significant damage were reported.

The forecast is that the sky in Greece will return to normal this Wednesday (24), with a change in air currents. Temperatures are also expected to drop in the coming hours.
