The Oasis song that Noel Gallagher confessed to copying “every chord”

-

In the mid-90s, Oasis became world famous for their grand and accessible melodies. More than that, he was also well known for the inflated ego of the Gallagher brothers and for many references, allusions and quotes to the Beatles.

Among those who turned their nose up at the band, it was common to belittle it with the argument that it was nothing more than a pile of plagiarism. Legally, Oasis didn’t commit plagiarism (unlike Led Zeppelin), but there’s no denying that their music is very reminiscent of other artists’ songs.

“I took her from ‘This Guy’s in Love with You’ [de Burt Bacharach]”, admitted the sincere guitarist. “That’s where I got all the chords, I just moved some of them around: I put one here, the other there…”

Burt Bacharach is a singer, songwriter and pianist born in the United States in 1928 — and died in 2023, aged 94. He was very successful between the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 80s, when he worked with several artists and won six Grammys and three Oscars.

In another interview, Noel expressed surprise at not having been sued by Burt.

“[‘Half the World Away’ e ‘This Guy’s in Love with You’] they look exactly the same. I don’t know how he hasn’t sued me yet!”

One of those typical Oasis acoustic songs composed and sung by Noel himself, “Half the World Away” was released at the end of 1994. As it was originally released as a b-side to the single “Whatever”, most fans only discovered it in 1998, when it was released on the rarities and studio leftovers compilation “The Masterplan”.
