The director of the Avatar saga updated the status of a project that has been planned for a decade.

James Cameron will be busy for many years with the Avatar saga, but he also has other projects outside the world of Pandora. There’s a special project he’s been developing for decades, with Guillermo del Toro in the director’s chair, and it looks like the time has finally come to bring it to fruition.

The director of Avatar: The Way of Water was the star of a masterclass in Paris in April. In it, Cameron spoke about the projects he has on the horizon and announced that he will start working on Fantastic Voyage. The film is a remake of Richard Fleischer’s 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage.

“We’ve been developing this for a few years and plan to move forward very soon,” Cameron said at the event, as quoted by Variety magazine. “I think we can do something really good.”

When Cameron speaks in the plural, he is referring to himself and his regular collaborator Jon Landau, with whom he also works on the Avatar saga.

Fantastic Voyage tells the story of the adventure of a submarine trapped inside a human body. Raquel Welch, Stepdhen Boyd and Edmon O’Brien lead the film’s cast.

Decades of development

Cameron began working on the project in the late 1990s, and in 2016 it was confirmed that Del Toro was in talks to take over as director. In 2017, the director postponed production of the film to focus on The Shape of Water, for which he won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. Five years later, the remake of Fantastic Voyage has still not been made.

Cameron, however, has not confirmed that Del Toro is still involved in the film. The director is currently filming Frankenstein, so Fantastic Voyage could be his next project after adapting Mary Shelley’s novel with Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi. On the other hand, Cameron is busy with Avatar 3, which is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.

It seems that even though Cameron announced that the remake will happen “very soon,” we’ll have to wait and see it happen. If Del Toro doesn’t direct it, another filmmaker will need to be found, which could also lengthen the wait. So for now, let’s just assume that Cameron hasn’t ruled out the possibility of making the project after so long.
