Robert Rodriguez created a cult classic with The Gunman’s Ballad.

Director Robert Rodriguez is known for very diverse works, such as Alita: Battle Angel, the adaptation of a cyberpunk manga; Sin City – The City of Sin, adapted from a famous comic book; and, of course, Planeta Terror, from the action, science fiction and horror genres.

However, the filmmaker had already laid the foundations for these large-scale productions many years before. With hits as cool as they were exaggerated, completely out of control in terms of action and violence, the writer and director regularly celebrated his homeland – Texas, on the border with Mexico.

An excellent example of Rodriguez’s cinema is his second feature film, with which he achieved his final breakthrough in Hollywood: The Gunman, from 1995. The film, ideal for those who like exaggerated and choreographed action, full of blood and quick dialogues, is available in the Max catalogue.

The Gunman’s Ballad: Shooters, blood and bandits

The Gunman’s Ballad is the second part of the call Mexico Trilogy by Rodriguez and continues the story of the titular musician from The Mariachi, who accidentally gets involved in a shooting-filled adventure because he was mistaken for a murderer. But now he wields his weapons more calculatedly, and since the murder of his lover, he has only one thing on his mind: bloody revenge.

The film not only stands out with countless wonderfully crazy characters, but, above all, with an ensemble of stars in roles that were tailor-made for them: Antonio Banderas as the ultimate gunslinger; Salma Hayek in the role with which she celebrated her big revelation; and a supporting cast full of A-listers, ranging from Rodriguez’s longtime friend and partner Quentin Tarantino to Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin and Steve Buscemi.

Furthermore, Banderas and company mercilessly claw their way into the audience’s hearts with grandiose, over-the-top gunfights. Here you can expect excessively brutal gunfights, in which red blood gushes in abundance, gangsters fly across the screen and the shock wave of an explosion can almost be felt on the sofa at home. And that’s precisely what makes The Gunman’s Ball one of the coolest, funniest and most interesting action films of the 1990s.
