The month of April is heading towards its final moments, finally bringing great news to the list of most watched films. After all, after long weeks with the Oscar nominees dominating the public’s interest — proof of how much the awards season was filled with great premieres —, news began to appear here and bring new faces here.

I mean, not that new. After all, the big highlight of this last week of the month is Dune: Part 2, sequel to a title that has already appeared here several times. However, with the arrival of this sequel on digital platforms, all attention turned to classic science fiction. And although the quality of the work is enough to guarantee this success, it cannot be denied that the memes helped to awaken the public’s curiosity about the space saga.

Another new feature here is the curious Perfect Days. The film had already made some noise at the Oscars when it was nominated for Best International Film, but its debut on streaming made more people notice this curious and yet so touching premise. After all, is it possible to find the beauty of life in a public bathroom?

Closing the round of news among the most watched films of the week, we have a beautiful national highlight. After a somewhat timid passage in cinemas, the excellent Property It is finally available and delivers one of the most powerful and indigestible stories of recent years. Using a conflict between exploited rural workers and their employers, the film brings to light several social issues that are very pertinent to our reality, such as class struggle, political polarization, urban violence and especially the way we see each other.

10. Property

Showing that national productions also appeal to the public, Propertyit secured its place on the list of most watched films and won over Netflix subscribers. Directed by Pernambuco native Daniel Bandeira, the film hit theaters in December 2023, but, unfortunately, it didn’t make enough noise and, because of that, it went unnoticed by many people.

However, Netflix bet on the plot and added it to its catalog in April. Now, the public can follow the story of Teresa (Malu Galli), a woman traumatized after suffering a robbery and who travels with her husband to the farm they have in the countryside.

On the other side, the dictator promises to annihilate all those who rebel, and this causes the rebels to unite in search of revenge. Written and directed by Zack Snyder (from The Man of Steel It is 300), the film brought veterans to the cast, such as Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal) and despite having received some positive reviews, it was criticized for the shallow construction of the characters. 4. Zone of Interest

Zone of Interest It’s one of those films that are too heavy, even without showing anything at all. Addressing the banality of evil, he tells the story of Rudolf Höss, the Nazi officer who commanded the Auschwitz concentration camp and how, despite the horror that was on the other side of the wall, he and his family continued with an apparently perfect and quiet.

And the strength of the film lies precisely in showing the day-to-day life of this family, so ordinary and banal, in the face of the horrors that were happening right next door. Between the screams of the victims imprisoned and tortured on the other side of the wall to the normalization of the Höss family’s speeches, Zone of Interest is an uncomfortable and somewhat shocking film that reminds us that the greatest atrocities come from those who consider themselves so good.

Zone of Interest is available on Prime Video.

3. Anatomy of a Fall

Anatomy of a Fall is another film that made a lot of noise thanks to the 2024 Oscar. Winner of the award for Best Original Screenplay, it mixes jury film with a dramatic thriller based on a very peculiar case: the death of a man in an isolated chalet in the middle of the mountains . With no one around other than his family, his wife becomes the prime suspect in the crime.

And it is from this that the work unfolds one of the most interesting texts of the year. The protagonist played Sandra Hüller (Zone of Interest) starts to be judged from a very biased perspective in which the important thing seems not to be the crime itself, but the jurors’ perceptions of it — in a speech that says much more about society than the murder in question.

Anatomy of a Fall is available on Prime Video.

2. Oppenheimer

The big winner of the 2024 Oscar for Best Film, Oppenheimer It is still very popular and, mainly, watched by the Brazilian public. The film directed by Christopher Nolan (The origin) retells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. And the story follows the scientist in a very dense character study that explores both his vanity as leader of the Manhattan Project and responsible for the weapon that will change the world as well as his fears about the impacts that all this can bring.

At the same time, the film delves into the personal controversies of this important figure of the 20th century. From his romantic relationships and betrayals to the political conflict that came after the war, Nolan delivers a story that goes far beyond how the bomb was created — and everything this with an impressive performance from Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) in the lead role.

Oppenheimer is available on Prime Video and for purchase and rental on iTunes and Globo Play.

1. Dune: Part 2

The big premiere in recent weeks is also the highlight among the most watched films in Brazil. After a very successful run in cinemas, Dune: Part 2 finally arrived on digital platforms and this made the sequel to Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) revenge story reach the top of our ranking. And it’s no surprise, especially considering that the film directed by Denis Villeneuve is already the most watched production in the world, with a total box office gross of US$697.7 million.

The new adventure delves deeper into the science fiction begun in the first part and, this time, works much more on the text full of criticisms of charismatic leaders and messianic figures. Thus, while the previous film showed how Paul could be the messiah who would liberate the planet Arrakis from the hands of the Empire, the new film shows that the protagonist seems to be much more interested in using the Fremen’s religious devotion to his advantage, not just to achieve his revenge, but also gain power that he never imagined he would have.

Dune: Part 2 is available for purchase and rental on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play.
