The Barbie actor dons the astronaut costume in the adaptation of one of the most acclaimed novels of the genre in recent years.
In addition to the big already established franchises, and with very interesting ideas on the way, science fiction cinema seems to be paving the way among major releases. One of them will start filming in the coming months: Project Hail Marywhich will star Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land).

Project Hail Mary is, in fact, the latest science fiction novel by Andy Weir, the writer behind the book The Martian, adapted by Ridley Scott for cinema in 2015. It tells a story in which the protagonist, Ryland Grace, He is the only survivor of a mission millions of miles from home that, if he fails, will destroy all of humanity. Little pressure, huh?
Writer Brandon Sanderson called it Weir’s best work, and of course there’s a lot of praise for the book, so much so that Amazon and MGM Studios didn’t miss the opportunity to bring it to theaters with a duo you might know from Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse, in which they were producers: Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Not much else is known about the project at the moment, but a few weeks ago it was said that the film could start filming in June this year. With a 2026 release date, it wouldn’t be surprising if those plans had been delayed, although there’s no news on the matter. Be that as it may, and as we said at the beginning, it seems that science fiction still has a lot to offer us on the big screen.
Ryan Gosling already played an astronaut in First Man, released in 2018, which chronicled Neil Armstrong’s journey to be the first man on the moon. The film can be seen on Star+.
